Forget the Standing Desk, Frequent Strolls Can Cut Health Risk of Sitting Down All Day

The media has had us believing that sitting down was ‘the new smoking’, in terms of the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

However, a new study may subtly change advice on what we can do to reduce the harm we are doing to our bodies simply by working at a desk.

The good news is: it couldn’t be much simpler.

The paper, which is published this month in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, has concluded that taking a 2-minute walk every hour can reduce the harm caused by sitting down the rest of the time.

The study looked at 3,426 patients and tracked their activity levels over 3-4 years using a tracking device, like a Fitbit wristband.

It found that standing up instead of sitting has little effect on the risk of mortality. But those people who spent a little less time sitting down and a little more time walking around did experience a noticeable benefit in their risk of early death.

It concluded that swapping 2 minutes of sitting for walking per hour reduced the risk of premature death by approximately 33%.

Read details of the study here.
