How Hypnotherapy Changed My Life

The only frame of reference available to most people for understanding hypnotherapy is stage hypnosis. So it’s no wonder that in public perception, it is seen as a bit whacky.

This is a shame because it obscures, for many people, the truth that – with the right practitioner – hypnotherapy is a powerful tool that can change your life for the better.

What is amazing is that in order to achieve that change, all you need to do is sit in a chair and day-dream while someone talks to you.

As you can tell, I am a firm advocate for hypnotherapy. This is because it changed my life.

Let me explain why.

My first experience of hypnotherapy was in 2004. My brother had just quit smoking after ten years, off the back of a one-off 2-hour session with a hypnotherapist who worked on Church Street, Stoke Newington (he hasn’t smoked since, by the way).

‘What was it like?’, I asked him.

‘I can’t really remember. We talked for a bit. Then we did the hypnosis. It was a bit weird, I was in a trance. Time passed very quickly. Then it was over and suddenly I was an ex-smoker.’

Can you really break a decade-long addiction in two hours simply by sitting in a chair listening to someone speak?

As a smoker myself, I was intrigued and arranged a series of sessions with the same hypnotherapist.

At the time, I not only smoking demarcated my relaxation time. It marked the end of having-to-think-about-work and the start of my down-time.

Smoking and relaxing had become so firmly entwined in my mind that I couldn’t imagine one without the other.

At the back of my mind there was a voice, which struggled to make itself heard. But I knew it was there nonetheless. It was saying ‘ You have to stop this.’ The only problem was, I had no idea how….until my brother recommended the hypnotherapist.

Within four weeks, staggeringly I had gone from smoking on a daily basis, to being a total non-smoker. I had cravings every so often, but they were manageable. I didn’t need to smoke to relax. Just a few weeks before, I struggled to imagine this was even possible.

But this wasn’t what changed my life.

What did was the lesson that there are practical tools out there – which actually work – that can help us break out of negative patterns of thought and behaviour, from which we may have previously assumed there is no escape.

The experience of hypnotherapy gave me a sense of perspective over what had been going on inside my own mind, almost for the first time.

I realized that feelings can become like a stuck record. Situation X occurs, Response Y inevitably follows. Too easily we can assume ‘ Well, that’s just how I am, that’s how I respond to this situation.’

Hypnotherapy taught me, for the first time, that actually patterns of thought and behaviour don’t have to be fixed. They can be broken, relatively easily.

I also realized for the first time how many tricks my mind would play on itself. ‘One drag won’t matter’ etc….

I credit that lesson with changing my life because it was the moment I stopped living life in auto-pilot and accepting my thoughts as facts. 

This is a simple lesson and hypnotherapy is by no means the only means of learning it. But it is a powerful one because lessons accrued through personal experience are often the most enduring.
