MEDITATION & MINDFULNESS

What is meditation?

Just as physical exercise trains the body, meditation trains the mind. There are a great number of different meditation traditions but in Zen we are focused on improving mental wellbeing and developing insight. Zen has a long history of instructing meditation purely for the purposes of keeping body and mind in optimal condition, and for many people this is their main reason for practicing. If you wish to delve a little deeper, Zen also offers the opportunity to look into the questions of who we really are and the nature of reality itself. Medical research in the last 20 years has shown that a regular practice can improve concentration, improve sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, revitalize your sex life, combat depression, unleash creativity and reenergize your system.

What is mindfulness?

Too much of our lives are spent on automatic pilot. It is all too easy to find ourselves trapped in a spiral of negative or uncreative thinking, from which there seems no escape. For many people, this is the reality of life, the backdrop to existence itself. Work can seem like an endless succession of crises, which leave us exhausted and in danger of losing the essential joy of living. Mindfulness is the art of reversing this process. In essence it teaches us to find joy in the simplest things, so that we re-engage with the flow of life. Our culture teaches us that happiness and contentment are to be found somewhere in the future, but mindful practice says happiness is to be found all around you at all times. We just need to learn to slow down to feel it for ourselves.

How long does it take to work?

The golden rule with meditation is regular practice.

With daily practice most people begin to feel the benefits within two weeks.
