Why Yoga?

 

The physical exercises of Yoga are traditionally seen as an excellent preparation for meditation practice. As a discipline it invites students to investigate the connections between breath, mind and movement whilst developing a high level of flexibility and stamina. Increased range of movement, improved core stability and better balance are just some of the health benefits which you can expect with a regular practice. Learning how to release tension from the breath, however, is perhaps the most profound effect of Yoga training. The ability to breathe freely and deeply has startling impacts on both physical and mental health as it affects all the systems of the body and for many people this is the key towards leading a less stressful life. For those interested in taking the study of breath a little further, Pranayama practice introduces students to more specialised breath patterns which can lead to deep levels of meditative stillness.

What style is right for me?

 

With the wide range of styles available these days it is easy to get a little confused so we try to keep things as simple as possible. For those interested in a challenge we offer Power Yoga. This is a faster class designed to increase endurance and core strength whilst focusing on opening and stretching tight muscles. Don’t worry if you are a complete beginner, we start you off slow! Particular attention is paid to alignment and correct breathing technique in order to build a strong foundation for continued progress. If you prefer your Yoga more relaxed, we offer restorative classes designed to help you unwind. The focus here is on helping to release tension with a more gentle approach. Much of the practice can be done on the floor and often we will use blocks and bolsters to help you find your most comfortable position. If you can’t make up your mind which style is for you, just let us know and you can always have a little bit of both!
